Efforts of the Lagos State Government to reduce the hardship of Lagosians in their quest for affordable homes would receive a boost soon with the construction of 41 Blocks of 492 flats in Igando.
The General Manager, New Town Development Authority, Dr Adeyemi Isiba, during a visit to the site said contracts for the construction of the estate had been awarded while the project is expected to be delivered within 18 months.
He hinted that each block would be a three-storey building which would comprise of 1, 2, and 3 bedroom flats on each of the floors. The concept, he explained, is to have all categories of people to co-habit, mingle and interact with one another, and to also discourage the growth of shanties in and around the estate.
Dr Isiba noted that, upon completion, the estate would form part of the Home Ownership Mortgage Scheme of the State and the apartments would be sold to interested members of the public through the mortgage system.
The estate which would sit on 10.9 hectares of land would among other infrastructure, have a network of eight well-paved major roads and 10 alleys; portable water scheme, electricity, laundry mart, solar drying house and a refuse house.
Also, it would be provided with a shopping mall, a properly landscaped and beautiful environment and recreational facilities, such as, community hall, lawn tennis and basket ball courts.
The General Manager urged Lagosians to support the laudable project and desist from acts that could undermine its timely delivery.
He frowned at the illegal excavation and mining of sand in the project site, including the unauthorised carting away of “hard core” materials from demolished structure, warning that anyone caught in the act would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
